Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre

A collaborative facility operated jointly by the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, is a collaborative facility operated jointly by the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

We also host five Natural Environment Research Council Facilities that are available to UK scientists through competitive application to the relevant Steering Committees.

We aim to perform, stimulate and support high-quality research in the Earth, Environmental and Biomedical Sciences through development and maintenance of high-end analytical facilities, inter-disciplinary exchange and collaborative interaction.

Research

SUERC?s mission is to perform, stimulate and support high-quality basic, applied and strategic research within the Scottish University community, and beyond in the Earth, Environmental and Biomedical Sciences. SUERC provides a focus in Scotland for high-quality research through its own research programme and by assisting partner universities successfully to bid for and deliver research grants. Through teaching and training SUERC contributes to the future supply of highly able scientists. Commercial research and testing is a valuable source of additional income and frequently contributes to national welfare and security. SUERC is owned jointly and funded equally by the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and Aberdeen University is an Associate Member. Links to several other Scottish institutions are illustrated by SUERC?s lead role in SAGES.

SUERC provides a focus for high-quality research in the fields of Earth, Environmental and Biomedical Sciences in Scotland. We do this through our own research programmes and through enhancing the research of our partner universities by increasing their ability to attract research funding and delivering world-class capability to their programmes.

Our collaborative model is built around the research reputations of our academic staff, a high level of technician expertise and a cadre of experienced post-doctoral research assistants and senior research fellows. We host an extensive suite of cutting-edge instruments and laboratories, and contribute to the future supply of highcalibre scientists through teaching and research.

Our main areas of research activity and contacts are:

The SUERC AMS laboratory is recognised by NERC as a facility suitable for NERC-funded science.

Commercial Activities

We offer some of our services on a fully commercial and/ or consultancy basis. We operate a comprehensive suite of instrumentation and clean laboratories maintained by a first-class team of technical experts. Examples of our commercial activities include:

  • PSL systems for irradiated food detection;
  • Luminescence dating;
  • Radiocarbon dating in forensics and archaeology;
  • Isotope analysis in petroleum geology;
  • Measurement of cosmogenic nuclides;
  • 13C breath testing in biomedicine;
  • Energy expenditure using doubly-labelled water;
  • Compound specific isotope analysis;
  • Radionuclide analysis;
  • Elemental analysis.
